Threat To Abrogate Treaty
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CAIRO, August 26.
In a Note delivered to-day, the Egyptian Prime Minister (Nahas told Britain that, unless she d "hew Mid constructive move” before the mid of the Egyptian Parliament’s present session, the BritishSwikln^off 7 revtei<m Ulks wouW Nahas Pasha said that in the absence a ? ri tish move to meet Egypt's national demand. Egypt wouiu tordtklly announce the termination of 'the talks “with the attendant treaty abrogation.” Political circles believe that the door to negotiations thus remains open, at lWl6t ufitll Parliament adjourns for the summer recess ih mid-September. Nahas Pasha was replying to a per- , ih. es *age last week from the British Foreign Secretary (Mr Herbert Morrwon). Egyptian political quarters believe that the Government is now inclined towards recourse to the United Nations Security Council where Egypt’s case has been pending since 1947. Such a move would be calculated to quieten the growing restlessness in Egypt at the protracted treaty negotiations, and also allow more room for manoeuvring With no time limit. Responsible Egyptian authorities contend that, if Brita n haS the legal right under the present treaty to maintain troops in the Canal Zone until 1956, that ri«ht has been abrogated by numerous treaty violations. The Foreign Minister (Salah ei Din Pasha) is preparing a list of alleged violations which, according to reports, include Britain’s refusal to hand ovef to Egypt the small noris of Adabia and Ataka, qn the Red Sea. Objection is also made to the alleged establishment of msnv airfields on Egyptian territory without consent; and the maintenance of more forces than the treaty allows.
