PLAY IN NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIP
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Aug. 27. A New Zealand championship billiards record was made by the title-holder, R. Carrick, of Auckland, when the Dominion tournament began at. Auckland to-day. His break of 187 largely enabled him to beat another Aucklander, J. J. Shepherd, by 804 points to 446. Three games a day are being played in the tournament. In the first, E. V. Roberts, of Auckland, beat A. Albertson, of Auckland, by 629 points to 388. Roberts averaged 10.5 points a cue. His best breaks were 85. 63, 52, 47, and 82 unfinished. L. Stout, of Wellington, beat J. Proctor, of Southland, by 699 points to 293. Stout averaged 11 points a cue, and had far too much experience for the youthful Proctor. His best breaks were 51 and 50. Carrick and Shepherd contested the evening session. Play was even up to 200, but Carrick drew well away from thia point. His best breaks were 61, 57, 187, 41, and 48, and he averaged 14.4 points a cue. Shepherd’s best breaks were 71 and 41.
