N.Z. UNION MEETS

HAWKE’S BAY PROTEST REJECTED (New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, August 27. The New Zealand Rugby Union at its meeting to-day did not uphold Hawke's Bay’s contention that the granting ol Auckland's shield challenge against Waikato last Saturday was -unfair to unions that had a regular’fixture with Waikato. It was decided to inform Hawke's Bay that Auckland's challenge conformed with the rules.

Referees appointed for coming matches were:—Waikato v. Bay of Plenty. September 1 Mr R. Marshall (Buller); Waikato v. Fiji, September 8, Mr E. J. Young (Thames Valley); Auckland v. Fiji, Sepr tember 12, Mr A. A. Griffiths (Waikato); Waikato v. Taranaki, September 15, Mr L, Walsh (Canterbury); North v. South Colts, September 29, Mr W. Bee (North Otago). “There is, no need to fear for the wellbeing of Rugby in the country districts.” wrote Mr N. A. McKenzie, liaison officer for the New Zealand Rugby Union with the Fijian team on the early part of its tour. It had been a delight to him to meet continuously men whose whole heart was in the game, he said. He also expressed his conviction that there could be no more admirable jumping-off place in the North Island for an international touring side than Te Aroha, because of its very good accommodation, training facilities, and so on.
