OBITUARY

MR W. P. MCDONOUGH (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 25. The president of the McDonough Steel Corporation, Oakland, California, and an important figure in industry in that State, Mr Patrick W. McDonough, who was visiting New Zealand in the course of a world holiday tour, died suddenly at his hotel in Wellington last night. i Mr McDonough had arrived in Auckland by air on Tuesday morning and in Wellington yesterday morning and had visited two personal friends before returning to his hotel just before 10 o’clock last night. He was found dead I in bed this morning. i Mr McDonough was born in San Francisco, of an early Irish immigrant family, and had a romantic career. Self-educated and rising from poor circumstances to considerable affluence, he qualified both as a member of the California Bar Association and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

A great part of his life was bound up in industry. He graduated from boilermaker to steel plant superintendent, consulting engineer and inventor to successful manufacturer and owner of the McDonough Steel Corporation, of which he was president. During the Second World War his firm, specialising in mass produced tanks and infantry landing craft, earned four times the Army and Navy “E” for record production. He also served in Washington as a Presidential adviser and as director of the Smaller War Plants Corporation, one of the bureaux dealing with war production. He visited New Zealand on official duties in 1943 and on a private visit in 1946.

He is survived by his widow and three daughters.

MR R. N. HOOPER

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. August 25. Mr Ronald Noel Hooper, civilian administrative officer at Northern Military District Headquarters, died suddenly on Wednesday. He was 58. He had been a member of the Army civilian staff for 25 years. Mr Hooper was educated at Nelson College. He was transferred to the Army from 1939 to 1945 and held the rank of major. Mr Hooper is survived by his wife and two sons. Headquarters staff and all branches and corps of the Army were represented at the funeral today.

MR A. T. GOULD

(New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, August 27. The death of Mr Alfred Tracey Gould occurred suddenly at his home this morning. Mr Gould, who was 77, was a member of the Nelson Harbour Board for 27 years, and its chairman for 14 years. He was a former president of the New Zealand Justices’ Association, and for a number of years he was president of the Nelson Provincial Progress League and Chamber of Commerce.
