INDOOR RODEO IN CHRISTCHURCH

A rodeo in the Wentworth on Saturday was believed to be the first presented indoors in New Zealand. The compere, Mr Happi Hill, said that the rodeo, or round-up as he thought it should be called, had been held as an experiment and its success was shown by the fact that people had to be turned away. The acts included one in which a pinto pony ridden by Beryl Riley jumped through a hoop studded with swords which left a gap of only 37Jin, and others in which Ken Huntly used a stock-whip to split an apple on Beryl Riley’s head and to strip an evening dress from her. Happi Hill gave an exhibition of marksmanship, shooting electric-light bulbs with a pistol from horseback. Roping tricks were demonstrated by Ken Huntly and Ross Muir presented a juggling act. Songs, square dancing and calf and steer-riding events were also included in the programme, and some riders from Kaikoura and the West Coast did well in attempts to stay on buck-jumpers. An evening show and a matinee were presented on Saturday and will be siiown again next Saturday. Part of the proceeds went to the ShirleyRichmond Plunket Society and the Tasman House candidate in the Sydenham School’s queen carnival.
