DEERSTALKERS’ ASSOCIATION
COUNCILS TO BE FORMED IN EACH ISLAND (New Zealand Press Association)
INVERCARGILL, August 25.
“There was never any thought in our minds of a split between the two islands,” said Mr A. D. Kitto at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association which began in Invercargill to-day. Mr Kitto, who represented Wanganui, Taihape, Waimarino, and Ruahine, was speaking to a motion to set up councils in the North and South Islands. Mr Kitto explained that a meeting had been held in Palmerston North of the nine North Island branches and at the meeting it had been decided to form a North Island Council.
“We had no thought of interfering in any way with the work of headquarters,” said Mr Kitto. “The council has no power and is merely for discussion of problems peculiar to the North Island. We hope the South Island will follow our lead.” Mr Kitto then moved “that a council of the branches of each island may be formed with one branch in each island to be chosen annually as the caretaker branch for its respective council.”
Discussing the motion Mr W. H. L. Robinson (North Canterbury) said that the South Island-North Island “snake” was rearing its ugly head again. He thought the idea of the councils a good one, but he would not like to see anv usurping of the powers of the Dominion organisation. After a long discussion the motion was put and carried.
The election of officers resulted; president. Dr. G. B. Orbell (Southland): secretary, Mr T. P. Wilson (Otago).
The Dominion headquarters for the coming year will be in Dunedin.
