PROVING TRIALS BEGIN

LONDON, August 24. An entirely new British machinegun, which uses the same ammunition as the .280 semi-automatic rifle, is at present undergoing proving trials. Experts claim that it is the simplest automatic weapon ever produced. The guns weight is considerably less than the Vickers, which it may replace, while the rate of fire is reputed to be greater.

The United States battleship lowa (45,000 tons), which had been laid up for nearly two years and a half, was recommissioned to-day. She was the fourth and last of her class to return to sea duty.
