DISPUTE OVER NEW GUINEA
INDONESIA “STILL STRUGGLING ”
BANGKOK, August 17. The Indonesian Foreign Minister (Dr. Achmed Subjardo) said yesterday that Indonesia would not fight for Dutch New Guinea with armed strength, but “with diplomacy, patience and persuasion.” He said: “We are still struggling to bring it into the Indonesian Republic.”
Dr. Subjardo is the leader of an Indonesian goodwill mission which is visiting Bangkok. Asked if Indonesia would favour joining a Pacific defence alliance, Dr. Subjardo said: “We like our independence. Having just emerged from colonialism, Indonesia is rather suspicious of committing her recently won independence to any alliance.” He said Indonesia was still maintaining eood ’ relations with Communist Ching.
