SHIP RUNS ON REEF

TOTAL LOSS LIKELY (Rec. 11 p.m.) RAROTONGA, Aug. 11. The motor vessel Alexander (377 tons) formerly owned by the Anchor Shipping Company, ran aground on a reef at Aitutaki, a short distance from the anchorage and close to the recently-wrecked Karoro at 5.20 a.m. to-day The vessel was on a voyage from Suva to Aitutaki with a cargo of aviation spirit. She is firmly aground, and is taking in a large quantity of water. She is expected to be a total loss. The Charlotte Donald and a Fairmile launch, the Mahurangi. which were anchored at Aitutaki went immediately to the assistance of the Alexander, but failed in their combined efforts to refloat the vessel. The passengers and mail were safely transferred in a calm sea to the Charlotte Donald. It is expected that a large quantity of the cargo will be salvaged.
