NATIONAL PARTY CANDIDATES

FOUR MORE CHOSEN

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, August 5. Selection committees for the St. Kilda, Mornington, and Dunedin Central electorates met on Saturday to select candidates to represent the National Party in the General Election. Cr. J. G. Barnes, Deputy-Mayor of Dunedin, was chosen from five nominations to contest the St. Kilda seat, Mr R. G. Pilling, science and sports master at John McGlashan College, was chosen from two nominations to contest the Mornington seat, and Mr W. P. MacDougall, an electrical instructor and senior master at the King Edward Technical College, was chosen from five nominations to contest the Dunedin Central seat.

The remaining National Party selection to be made in Dunedin is that for the Dunedin North electorate, where the nomination of Sir Donald Cameron is expected to be confirmed to-morrow evening. All sitting National members in other electorates in Otago and Southland have been confirmed in their candidatures. These are Messrs W. A. Bodkin (Central Otago), T. L. Macdonald (Wallace), J. R. Hannan (Invercargill), G. R. G. Herron (Awarua), J. A. Roy (Clutha), and T. L. Haynie ■> (Oamaru). Waimarino Seat Mr A. H. McPherson, of New Plymouth, has been selected as the official National Party candidate for the Waimarino electorate, says a Press Association message from New Plymouth. Mr McPherson was the National Party candidate for the same seat at the 1949 election.

MR NASH AT AUCKLAND

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 5. The election campaign is already in full swing for the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Nash). He' flew to Auckland from Wellington on Saturday morning, and after attending the Rugby League test at Carlaw Park he met Auckland Labour candidates. In the evening, he travelled by car to Rotorua, where to-day he attended receptions at Whakarewarewa and Ohinemutu. Mr Nash returned to Auckland this evening, and to-morrow morning he will leave by air for Invercargill. , “I have never known feeling among my own people to be better before an election campaign than now,” said Mr Nash, who added that he realised that he was chiefly meeting party supporters. Voluntary subscriptions were pouring in, he said.
