RACING NATIONAL HURDLES TOMORROW

Cornishman And Gay Fellow Early Favourites

The New Zealand Grand National Hurdles will be the outstanding attraction on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting at Riccarton to-morrow.

The field is rich in quality, and is headed by the Washdyke-trained Wee Mac, which won the Trentham Hurdles at the Wellington winter meeting last month, leading all the way. Wee Mac’s weight is 11-1, and next in the handicap is the Great Northern Hurdles winner, Cornishman, with 11-0.

Cornishman outclassed a strong field in the Great Northern Hurdles, in which he carried 10-3 and led practically all the way, keeping well clear of all challengers in the straight. Among the unplaced horses were Jon Rosa and Gay Fellow, which will meet him again to-morrow.

Gay Fellqw, which won this race under 9-2 last year will have a Strong following for his attempt to win again. He completed a double in the Jumpers’ Flat Handicap on Saturday, winrung just as decisively as he did last year.

Dakota was the outstanding hurdler at Trentham last month, winning the Lambton and Winter Hurdles after running fourth in the Trentham Hurdles on the first day. This Ellerslietrained Contact gelding is a sound stayer and a neat jumper, and his record entitles him to consideration.

Of those carrying less than 10-0 Count Bian, All Pockets, and Personality may fare best. Count Bian finished strongly to run Wee Mac to a neck in the Trentham Hurdles on July 7, and he did not race again until Saturday, when he came from well back to finish third in the Jumpers’ Flat behind Gay Fellow and Personality. All Pockets, the only Riccarton hurdler in the field, has not yet raced in a field up to this strength, but his winning performances under big weights at Riccarton last season stamped him as being above the average. Personality won the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles in June, His failure in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham last month was attributed to his slipping a muscle late

In ths race. The Bulandshar gelding was running on strongly in second place in the Jumpers’ flat Handicap on Saturday, and he will be a very fit candidate. The double will be on the Woolston Handicap and the Grand National Hurdles. Sports Post, which has easily won his two races at Riccarton, will again be hard to beat in the Woolston Handicap, in spite of his big weight of 9-11, But he is likely to be well tested by gallopers of the ability of Sharessa Associate, Quarry, Tongs, and Gallant. The consistent Trench Fray, a close second in the Parliamentary Handicap and the Winter Oats at Trentham last month, will be one of the favourites for the Heathcote Handicap, in which Flying Sovereign and My Hero should also strengthen the South Island representation. The Trentham winner, Bambton. and Golden Coronach/ which ran soundly in the Winter Cup on Saturday after befinning slowly, appeal most of the Nortn sland candidates, r Free Gift and Wandering U |umner Handicap: Notable and Orontes, Wealthy and Young Prince.
