The Russell Memorial Steeplechase, the principal jumping event on the first day of the combined Hawkes Bay-Dannevirke Hunt race meeting, developed into a debacle, all but the first two horse* to finish coming to grief. Dural, the third horse, ran off and was remounted by hl* rider. The fourth horse, Master P*ter, also was remounted after falling. C. Christensen, rider of Sailor’s Song, w*s fined £5 for continuing on in the race after his mount had run off at the top of the straight the first time round.
