By beating Old Boys in the fourth round of the D.C.L. Shield competition on Saturday, Albion retained its lead of one point from University, -which won easily from Christchurch. Sunnyside-Spreydon had a runaway win from a weak Merivale team. Technical won by a single point from New Brighton, and Marist held a safe margin over Sydenham. Following are the results of senior grade matches:— Albion 5, Old Boys 0. Technical 9, New Brighton 8. Marist 17, Sydenham 6. Sunnyside-Spreydon 35, Merivale 0. University 14, Christchurch 0. At the end of the fourth round the points scored by the teams are as follows:—Albion 4, University 3, Marist 2i, Technical 2}. Linwood 2, Old Boys 2, Sydenham lj, Christchurch IJ. SunnysideSpreydon 1, New Brighton 0, Merivale 0. Next Saturday's games will be between New Brighton and Christchurch, Marist and Linwood, Sydenham and Merivale. Technical and Old Boys, University and Sunnyside-Spreydon. NARROW WIN FOR ALBION A very doubtful try. which was converted near the end of the game gave Albion its fourth successive win in the D.C.L. Shield competition in the match against Old Boys. Albion, which had the better of play, concentrated on making the game one for the forwards, while Old Boys attempted to open up play at every opportunity. The Albion forwards carried the day, fast-breaking men in D. Bodger and B. Hopping subduing the Old Boys fiveeighths, W. Duggan and D. Wilson, before they had swung into action. R. Carr, G. Bond, and W. Garlick were often at the head of fast, bustling forwards who gave the Old Boys backs no peace. D. Mayo, Old Boys full-back, frequently raced up to his three-quarters to make play, and he was the only back on the field to show real penetration. Half-time was taken without either side having scored. Old Boys made several promising bursts in the second spell, but they failed to finish off their movements. Near the end of the game the Altion backs swung into a passing rush, and D. McFarlane, who appeared to knock-on 10 yards short of the line, went over for a try which D. Otten converted. Albion won by 5 points (a goal from a try) to 0. Mr L. Mahoney was referee.

WIN BY 35 POINTS With a depleted team, Merivale battled gamely to hold Sunnyside-Spreydon, but numbers told the tale, and SunnysideSpreydon had a field day, running up 35 points. Tries were scored by R. Barnes (2), B. Kerr (2), R. Righton (2), and L. Righton. Barnes converted four tries and kicked two penalty goals. Mr R. C. Findlay was referee. GOAL-KICKING WINS GAME The goal-kicking of T. Jackson gave Technical a narrow win over New Brighton in a match played at Rawhiti Domain. Technical scored all its points in the first spell, Jackson kicking two penalty foals and R. McCammon scoring a try. or New Brighton, M. Harris kicked a penalty goal, and at half-time Technical led by 9 points to 3. New Brighton made several big efforts In the second spell, towards the end of which P. Carlunes, New Brighton fiveeighths, worked the blind side and sent J. King over for a well-earned try, which Carlines converted.

Technical won by 9 points (a try and two penalty goals) to 8 points (a goal from a try and a penalty goal). Mr F. H. Miller was referee.

marist finishes strongly Until about 10 minutes before time it seemed that Sydenham would hold Marist to a draw in the main game at Rugby Park, but Marist then scored two tries and a P enalt y goal, and won by 17 points to 6. Sydenham, with its vigorous, bustling forwards, and with its backs standing right up on their opponents, had the better of the game until the last quarter of an hour, although its six points came from field goals. The game produced only patches of good play. The best of the Marist backs was the full-back, P. O’Malley, who played a cool and resourceful game. His kicking was invariably safe. The Marist forwards were shaded in the loose by their opponents, but won the ball for their backs, particularly in the Second spell. Sydenham was unlucky with injuries, two forwards going off in the first spell. For a quarter of an hour the side was one man short. The forwards frequently were impressive in loose rushes, but the backs lacked much penetration. Their tackling, however, was first-class, and R. Bowick was outstanding. Early in the first spell Dixon kicked a field goal, and a few minutes later W. Wakelin, a forward, kicked another goal. Sydenham had much the better of the first spell, but in the last 10 minutes of it Marist all but scored oh several occasions. Finally Mullins scored by coming round the end of a line-out, and a penalty goal by Kearney made the scores level at the interval. Marist did not go to the front until the game was nearly over. Kearney kicked his second penalty goal, and then J. Douglas, on the right wing, scored a try after an orthodox passing movement. Right on time D. McCormick, Marist’s good loose forward, scored a try near the posts which he converted. The referee was Mr E. Woodhead. CHRISTCHURCH BEATEN University beat Christchurch by a surprisingly large margin in the early match at Rugby Park. Scoring four tries and converting one of them, University won by 14 points to 0. There was much ragged play among the forwards, and the only good back play came from occasional thrusts by University. In the first spell a good break by F. R. Wells, the University centre threequarters, gave him a try which R. O. McDowell converted. Wells was also largely responsible for the second try, scored by D. G. Reid. Christchurch had a turn on attack early in the second spell, and missed scoring more than once only narrowly. Poor kicking cost the side points from penalties. J. Steel then scored for University and the last to score was Comer, the half-back. The referee was Mr W. J. Brown.
