(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Aug. 5. The riderless Councillor spoiled the Australian Hurdle Race at Caulfield when he led over the last 14 furlongs. He was leading when he tossed his jockey in the first half mile and carried on in the race At times he interfered with Student. Fairy Fable, and Promise You as they tried to get to the front. The winner. Royal Reward, was not fancied by his owner-trainer and Sydney owners, but he finished easily ahead of the 13-year-old gelding Hiatus. Result: AUSTRALIAN HURDLE RACE HANDIC .P, Of £2OOO. About two miles and five furlongs. ROYAL REWARD 9-7 .. Boswell 1 Hiatus 9-13 Randall 2 Student 9-12 .. .. Denham 3 There were 13 starters. Five lengths; one length and a half. Time. smin 3sec. Betting: 25-1 Royal Reward, 33-1 Hiatus, 7-1 Student.
