NEW ENROLMENTS AT AUCKLAND
POSSIBLE EFFECT ON MARGINAL SEATS “TM Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, August 1. More than 25,000 new enrolments in Auckland’s 14 electorates had been dealt with up to yesterday, and hundreds more awaited checking. By no means all the 25,000 persons will be voting for the first time at the coming election, but they are all new electors in their respective electorates. While their vote in the average may perhaps provide no great surprise, how they will affect the individual results is still largely an unknown factor. Those electorates showing substantial gains are among the marginal seats, where a relatively small swing of votes could meafi the of the sitting candidate. Waitakere, which so far has 2500 new voters, is held by Mr H. G. R. Mason (Labour), who had a majority of 930 in 1949. Otahuhu was won in 1949 by Mr F. L A. Gotz (National) by 1275 votes; already it has. 2500 new enrolments. Tamaki, where Mr E. H. Halstead’s majority for the National Party at the last election was 1095, has 2350 newcomers. The situation in the other "marginal” seats is as follows:—Roskill: new voters so far, 2500: National majority over combined Labour vote in 1949. 318. Mount Albert: new voters. 1550; Lab our majority in 1949, 931. Parnell: new voters, 1800; National majority in 1949, 960. North Shore: new voters, 1000; National majority In 1949, 1344.
