ADDINGTON MARKET

SHEEP AND LAMBS - CHEAPER GOOD SALE FOR FAT CATTLE The reduction in the value of skins had a sharp reaction at Addington yesterday, when fat sheep and lambs were reduced in price in sympathy. Wethers were back by 10s a head and all but the best ewes by 4s. Fat lambs were back 5s to 10s a head. Fat cattle had a somewhat erratic sale but were dearer by £2 a head for the best classes of beef. STORE SHEEP .nS 1 ® entr y ot store sheep consisted of 1200 ewes, 694 lambs, and 242 wethers, a total of 2136, against 1563 last week. The selection of ewes was of very good quality for a mid-winter yarding. A number of lines of Chatham Islands ewes were forward, but after a very rough passage they did not look their best. Good Chathams ewes made from 60s to 68s 6d, and others 52s to 58s. Several excellent lots of local ewes were offered, and on the whole quality was a good deal better than the average for an Addington winter yarding. A particularly attractive pen of 46 two-tooth Corriedale ewes from Saunders Bros. (Omihi), in lamb to Southdowns, made £6 17s, and a pen of two and three-shear ewes from the same source made £6 10s. Another pen of two-tooth Corriedales made £6. Three pens of good aged halfbreds from one vendor in Mid-Canterbury made 73s and 76s for the tops, and 64s for the rest. With an increased offering ot fat cattle, th* values in this section at the Burnside market were fully 30* a head below last week’s rates. The yarding included a number of consignments of excellent quality ox beef, but there was a large offering of ordinary and unfinished sorts. Bidding was confined mostly to the local trade. Cows, which met with ke*n competition ' last week, receded by fully £2 10s a head. In the fat sheep section the number penned was approximately 1900. This was well below the number of sheep required, with the result that prices were firm to 3s better than last week. The store cattle entry consisted of two or three pens of poorly-bred sorts, and these did not command any great attention. Runner* and vealers. however, which are in short supply, met with a buoyant sale, and prices for these were firm on late sal*s. Baconers and porkers were again in strong demand and, although there was a fair entry of both classes to hand, buyers were bidding freely, and last week’s high value* for baconers were surpassed.
