TREES CUT DOWN
INTERFERENCE WITH RIVER WORKS
In the search for firewood some persons have cut down trees on the Halkett stopbank and in reserves adjacent to the Waimakariri river and dead wood has been' removed from rope protection works designed to catch silt. The secretary of the North Canterbury Catchment Board (Mr W. W. Brough) said yesterday that the willows and poplars had a very vital purpose in tne board’s protection works and theuj removal might weaken the banks at critical places increasing the danger of a break-through in time of flood. Persons interfering with protection works are liable to fines up to £5OO.
