LABOUR PARTY AFFILIATION
UNION VOTES IN FAVOUR (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 1. The first trade union to decide its policy towards affiliation with the Labour Party since the Political Disabilities Amendment Bill became law last year has voted in favour of affiliation. The union is the Manawatu Flax Mills and Flax Textile Employees’ Industrial Union of Workers, with a membership of 221. A majority of the total membership of the union—not a majority of those taking part in the ballot—is required before a union can contribute to the funds of a political party, and the flax workers’ ballot is the first to be held since the bill became law. The result was a vote of 123 in favour of affiliation, giving a majority of 25. The remaining 98 ballot papers distributed included 85 which were not returned, and there were 11 votes against the proposal and two informal votes.
