MR J. K. McALPINE VOLUNTEERS
OFFER TO PERFORM ANY SERVICE
“Before the Prime Minister had finished his broadcast, I telephoned tips Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.Pz) and volunteered any service that may be required,” said Mr J. K. McAlpine, M.P.. last evening. “I did this to ensure that I would be first in in Christchurch anyway. “I’ll go anywhere and do anything for as long as my help is required, to show that the community is behind the Government in this emergency,” Mr McAlpine continued. “There may be Physical limitations to what I can do — I'm 44 years of age—but I've lived a fairly tough life and I’d have a shot at most things. There are some jobs that require special experience; but I'd try anything. I’ll go down a coal mine, work on the wharf, or anywhere else so long as present conditions continue.
“I am absolutely incensed to think that anyone would stoon to the level of personal violence and intimidation. The sooner this country realises that we are fighting Communism here as surely as the boys in Korea the better it will be. This is a situation in which everyone must rally behind the forces of law and order,” concluded Mr McAlpine.
