NEW UNION AT NELSON
MANY MEN FAIL TO BEGIN WORK (New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, April 30. When a call was made at Nelson today many members of the newlyregistered Nelson Watersiders’ Society were not on hand, and it is believed than men who returned registration cards but were not members of the deregistered union will now be admitted to the society. Members of the deregistered union gathered at Anzac Pprk this morning, but were prevented by the police from holding a meeting. The first task of the new union was to unload sugar from the coaster Puriri.
Airmen who have been working at Nelson since the strike began returned to Woodbourne at the week-end.
SERVICEMEN AT LYTTELTON
MOST SHIPS WORKED YESTERDAY
Servicemen continued work on the waterfront at Lyttelton yesterday, most of the ships in port being worked. Probably the most unpleasant job was the discharging of cement from the Queen Anne. The small coastal shin Marlyn left for Wellington with a full cargo. No cargo vessels are due today. Waterside workers met in the watersiders’ social hall yesterday morning, when reports were given by the president (Mr J. Flood). The Lyttelton delegate on the national executive of the Waterside Workers’ Union (Mr J. D. Sargentina), who had been in Lyttelton and Christchurch over the weekend, returned to Wellington yesterday.
CLAIM FOR HOLIDAY PAY
DECISION RESERVED IN SUPREME COURT .(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 30. Mr Justice Hay has reserved his decision on whether waterside workers may be paid holiday pay due to them before the strike started. It is contended that the regulations introduced since the strike started prohibit such payments to men on strike. When legal argument finished today his Honour said he would give his decision as expsditiously al possible.
