HEALTH CENTRE FOR FACTORIES
OPENING IN WOOLSTON TO-DAY
The third industrial health centre to be established in New Zealand by the Department of Health will open in Woolston this morning and will serve an area containing approximately 42 factories employing 1500 workers. The other two centres are on the waterfronts at Lyttelton and Wellington. The centre is on land leased free from a rubber company, and it will be open from Monday to Friday, certain periods being fixed for appointments only. In the initial stages Miss A. J. Smellie, the industrial health nurse of the department, will be on duty in the centre. She was the first industrial nurse appointed to the department in Christchurch and established the waterfront centre at Lyttelton and assisted with the establishment of the health centre at the Addington Railway Workshops. The St. John Ambulance Brigade is expected to provide staff for the centre in the afternoons when the industrial nurse is not available.
With the opening of the clinic there will be eight full-time industrial nurses serving factories in Christchurch. Already established are six centres in private industry and one at the Addington workshops, and a total of 2824 employees is provided with the service.
