N.Z. EXPEDITION TO HIMALAYAS

FOUR ALPINE CLUB MEMBERS (New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, April 15. The last obstacle, that of arranging the transport of their food and equipment across the Tasman having been surmounted, a party of four New Zealand mountaineers which is to undertake an expedition to the Himalayas will leave as planned, early next month. The party will take about 12001 b of food and equipment from New Zealand. The party, which comprises Messrs W. G. Lowe, aged 27, E. B Hillary, aged 31 (Auckland), H. E Riddiford, aged 29, and E. M. Cotter, aged 24 (Christchurch), will leave New Zealand on May 3 for Sydney and thence to India. All are experienced members of the New Zealand Alpine Club and the Canterbury Mountaineering Club. Only Mr Hillary has had experience in mountaineering outside of New Zealand. The expedition is purely a private one, planned in a spirit of adventure. The four climbers expect to be away about five months, three of which wifi be spent near the Himalayas: The area- the party proposes to explore is mainly in Garwhal. about 300 to 400 miles west of Mount Everest.
