Capture Of Town Of Yanggu

TOKYO, April 16. Allied forces advanced to-day after taking wrecked Yanggu, the eastern anchor of the enemy’s Hwachon reservoir line in central Korea. Communist resistance behind a vast smoke screen was spotty. A United States force pushed through an artillery barrage of mortar fire 10 seize Yanggu, about six miles above the 38th parallel. Front line dispatches reported that the town was deserted.

Tank shells had exploded an ammunition dump among shattered mud huts.

Allied patrols on the western front probed into enemy positions, below Chorwon 17 miles north of the parallel. Chorwon is believed to be the assembly point for thousands of Communist reinforcements.

The enemy troops started fires to obscure their movements from Allied planes. Smoke billowed over the central ffont in clouds rising to 8800 feet.
