SERVICE TO BRITAIN
PRAISE BY EMPIRE STATESMEN
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, April 14. The Canadian Prime Minister (Mr Louis St. Laurent), in a tribute to Mr Bevin, said that he gave his life to serve the country he loved and to uphold the interests of ordinary men and women all over the world. Mr St. Laurent continued: “As long as there is freedom in the world, the untiring services of this great leader of the T a hour Movement to the cause of freedom and his valiant work for enduring peace will not be forgotten.” Mr P C. Spender, the Australian Minister of External Affairs, said he had learned to admire Mr Bevin as a steadfast Englishman who, irrespective of party stood for the finest things in which the British people believed. The leader of the Australian Labour Party (Mr J. B. Chifley) said: “Mr Bevin was a personal friend of mine. I very much regret the passing of a very great Englishman.”
