PLANE DAMAGED IN CRASH

SOMERSAULT WHILE LANDING

PASSENGERS ESCAPE SERIOUS INJURY (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 15.

A pilot and woman passenger in the Auckland Aero Club's Ercqupe monoplane narrowly escaped serious injury when the plane struck some low bushes while landing to-day and somersaulted on to its back. Watchers who saw the accident raced to the scene and lifted the plane up while the pilot and passenger were freed. They suffered minor bruises.

Piloted by Mr R, Ferris and carrying one woman passenger, the plane was making a low approach about 5 p.m. when the tricycle undercarriage struck some bushes on the edge of the runway. The plane somersaulted and crashed on to the field on its back with the propeller in the ground. As the perspex dome covering the cockpit was smashed in the two occupants could not get out of the aircraft until helpers lifted the plane up by its wings. Mr Ferris and his passenger then crawled out unhurt.

The plane was extensively damaged and is believed to be a total loss. It is insured for £l5OO. A single-engined monoplane of all-metal construction, it was flown from Belgium to New Zealand by Mr H. B. Newton, of New Plymouth, in October, 1947.

CYCLIST KILLED

COLLISION ON HALSWELL ROAD When he was struck from behind by a motor-car on the Halswell road early yesterday morning, a cyclist suffered fatal injuries. He was found to be dead on arrival at the Christchurch Public Hospital. The cyclist was:— Walter Edward Rickerby, aged 32, a blacksmith by occupation, but employed on a farm at Halswell. Mr Rickerby was cycling in a southwesterly direction along Halswell road about 12.45 a.m. yesterday when a car driven by Anthony Ashworth Hollis, of 53 Papanui road, travelling in the same direction, collided with him. The accident occurred between Tankerville road and Mount Magdala road. The car was fairly badlv damaged, and the bicycle was wrecked.

MAN DIES AFTER ACCIDENT

An elderly man died in the Auckland Hospital on Saturday night as a result of injuries he received when he was knocked down by a car In Grey’s avenue. He was Mr Thomas Angus, aged 74, of Grey’s avenue. The accident occurred shortly after 8 o’clock, and Mr Angus died about two hours later.
