MAN SHOT AT OPAWA
Alleged Assailant Arrested ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE Stanley Watts, a cabinet machinist, aged 35, was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital on Saturday evening suffering from a bullet wound in the stomach. A few hours later detectives arrested Andrew Purdie, a labourer, aged about 31, on a charge of attempted murder. Mr Watts was reported last evening to be seriously ill. Mr Watts was admitted to hospital about 8.30 p.m. on Saturday from 115 Clarendon terrace, Opawa. The bullet was from a .22 rifle. Detective-Sergeant R. S. Smith, Detective N. W. Wylie, and Acting-De-tectives L. W. Jackson and S. H. Allom made inquiries, and Purdie was arrested about 11.30 p.m. He will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning.
