DETRACT WINS AT OAMARU

SPRINT WON BY HIS LORDSHIP

OPEN RANGE AGAIN WINS HIGH-WEIGHT

Well ridden by B. J. Langford, Detract decisively won the Gardiner Memorial Handicap, the principal event on the concluding day of the Oamaru Jockey Club’s autumn meeting on Saturday. The Defaulter gelding covered the minimum of extra ground when he closed on the leaders racing to the home turn, and he made his challenge on the inner, galloping boldly over the final stages to win by two lengths from Goldstrike, Saieda and Home Circle, which had a keen struggle for the minor places. It was Detract’s third success this season for his Waiimate owner-trainer, Mr E. R. Curtis. First-day form proved valuable. His Lordship, Aegina, and Open Range completing doubles for the meeting. His Lordship beat a weak sprint field much more easily than he did on the first day. Top weight of 9st 5 lb could not stop the Riccarton-trained Defaulter mare, Aegina, from again winning the hack sprint, the second leg of the totalisator double. Aegina had been slightly affected by kidney trouble during the week, but the clear-cut nature of her win indicated that she had completely recovered by Saturday. By winning the Pukeuri HighWeight Handicap after leading from the barrier, Open Range gave the Halswell owner, Mr J. H. Watson, his second win of the day and his third for the meeting. Detective, also raced by Mr Watson, finished solidly to win the Waitaki Hack Handicap, the first leg of the double on Saturday.

The doubles totalisator paid £46 8s on the Detective-Aegina combination. Detective was the fifth favourite with doubles bettors, carrying 493 10s tickets in a pool of 5279. Ninetyfour tickets were redeemed on Aegina. The programme was run in fine but overcast weather, and the track was firm and fast. There was a small attepdanqe. The totalisator turnover for the day was £28,215 10s, compared with £29,250 10s on the second

day last year. The total for the meeting was £56,340, as., against 1 £59,038 last year. President’s Handicap

Detract raced in the middle of the held for the first mile of the President's Handicap, and after dashing through a gap on the inside early in the run home he soon mastered the others and went on to win by two lengths from Goldstrike, which just beat Saieda and Home Circle home. ■■

Goldstrike and Indiana were last away, but Goldstrike was hurried along to join Detention in front near the mile. Detention and Goldstrike were followed to the six furlongs by Saieda, Detract, Redlo, Indiana, and Home Circle, with Finance tailed off.

Goldstrike attempted to put a break on the field on the downhill grade between the four and the three furlongs, but the others increased speed to keep within striking range. Goldstrike led round the home turn, where Saieda and Detention were trailing, and Home Circle was improving her position wider out. Detention was one of the first beaten, and Home Circle spoiled her chance by running in. Detract then made his claim on the inner, and he dashed past the leaders to win convincingly. Goldstrike beat Saieda by a neck for second, and Home Circle was a neck further back fourth. Then there was a gap to Indiana and Detention. The Sprinters Only four started in the Elderslle Handicap, in which His Lordship completed a double for the meeting. The Lord Bobs gelding followed Fille d’Honneur from the barrier to the furlong, running past the Finis filly with ease and beating her by two lengths. Red Pickle, the tail-ender until the straight was reached. Improved slightly for a moderate third, two lengths and a half back, and four lengths clear of Oronoko, which was beaten at the straight entrance. Open Range’s Success Cleverly ridden by R. Drinkwater, Open Range led throughout in the Pukeuri High-weight Handicap. Open Range's only challenger in the straight was Full Tilt, which ran the Wild Chase gelding to hall a length, though the winning margin could have been widened. Western Lady and Don’t Listen lost several lengths at the start, Open Range immediately reaching the front and slowing the field down In the first furlong. The slow pace allowed Western Lady to dash through to be on terms with Open Range running to the six furlongs, where they were followed by Night Ruler. Full lilt, and Don’t Listen.

Open Range and Western Lady led past the half-mile and round to the home turn, where Don’t Listen and Full Tilt were closest to them. Western Lady weakened and Full Tilt challenged solidly but vainly. Open Range beating him by half a length. Western Lady was a moderate third, three lengths back, and a neck In front of Bren Gun, which made up some ground on the inner In the straight. Next, almost in line, were Sylvan and Don’t Listen.
