CONGRESSIONAL INVITATION

• MR MARTIN PRESSING FOR ACTION

WASHINGTON, April 12. Mr Joseph Martin, Republican leader in the United States House of Representatives, to-day said he would appear before the House Rules Committee to-

morrow to ask for a speedy clearance of his resolution inviting General MacArthur to address a joint meeting of the House and the Senate. Mr Martin said there had been no further discussions among Republicans of possible impeachment proceedings. He issued a statement approved by the House Republican Policy Committee, saying that the Truman Administration had proved its inability either to attain peace or wage war. "The President’s dismissal of General MacArthur and the 60,000 American casualties in Korea are further evidence of that fact,” said the statement “It is essential to the security of our country and to the peace of the world that Congress should have immediately the full facts as to our foreign policy. “One Munich brought a terrible J'ar. A super Munich may bring a holocaust that will end civilisation as We know it.” The Australian Associated Press has learned authoritatively that General MacArthur has not yet told the Republican leaders that he is willing to address a joint session of Congress on his return to the United States. Reports that General MacArthur had accepted the invitation were denied by Mr Martin. 11-M Mr Martin said he had not spoken to General MacArthur when he called Tokyo during the Republican Uiscus■um Of the proposal to invite General MacArthur to state his -case •gainst President Truman's policies before CongressgGeneral MacArthur had been asleep when the call’ wag put through.
