RACE STARTING

Sir,—l was interested in A. G. McDonald's letter to-day criticising the starting at Riccarton. It appeared quite unfair to me, as I consider the starter does a difficult job well. Admittedly, some horses were slow away, but that will always be so. I do consider that the stands that the starter has to use are far too low for him to see every horse a’ong the I’ne. If they were raised well above the horses, so that he was looking down on them, it would be infinitely easier for him to see a horse on the outside which had backed out The starter needs every assistance to see that the start is fair; and 1 urge strongly that the committee of ihe Canterbury Jockey Club should give this consideration.—Yours, etc., RICCARTON RACEGOER. April 11, 1951.
