NEW SUPREME COMMANDER
Arrival In Japan From Korea
(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) TOKYO, April 12. Lieutenant-General Matthew Ridgway, the new United Nations Supreme Commander, landed in Japan to-day, just over 24 hours after the dismissal of General MacArthur. The United States Army Secretary (Mr Frank Pace), who has been touring the Korean front, arrived by the same aircraft.
Genera! Ridgway, wearing a handgrenade taped to the chest of his battlestained uniform, was met by Major-General Doyle Hockey, Chief of Staff in Tokyo. There was no Guard of Honour at General Ridgway’s request. General Ridgway said he had already sent General MacArthur a message that he was coming to Tokyo and asking him would he see his successor “at General MacArthur's pleasure." Before leaving Korea General Ridgway had a 45-nvnute talk with the South Korean President (Mr Syngman Rhee).
