INDUSTRY MAY LOSE HEAVILY (New Zealand Press Association) HASTINGS, April 12. A hint that the fruit industry would lose heavily as a result of the waterfront strike was given to-day by Mr Harry Turner, chairman of the Apple and Pear Marketing Board. He said that the Condessa. which sailed this week with 175.000 cases of apples, would reach London at a time when the shipment would have to compete with a spate of Australian apples. Had the cargo left earlier as was intended this would not have happened. Arrangements made for the sale of 100,000 cases of apples to Canada and the United States this season, compared with 60,000 cases last season, have had to lapse because the only shipping available while the strike continued will be to Britain. Similarly profitable markets in the East cannot now be supplied. ARMY CLEARS COAL MINE BINS (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH. April 12. To provide further supplies of coal for Canterbury and other parts of the Dominion, Army personnel were engaged in clearing out the Dobson State mine bins at Dobson to-day. Similar action will be taken at other mine bins throughout the district.
