TRAVEL CLUB

ADDRESS BY MR IVAN MENZIES

A talk on the ideology of Moral Rearmament was given at a meeting of the Travel Club in Christchurch yesterday by Mr Ivan Menzies, of the Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company. Mr Menzies reminded his audience that there was in the world to-day a definite force bent on destroying freedom. The temptation, in a pleasant land like New Zealand, was to feel that it was not the concern of the individual to combat this force. He felt that if war were to be avoided and freedom maintained, each person should accept an ideology, a set of principles, which would be an answer to Communism, and end the cold war. This ideology should give a man a feeling that he had a mission in life, and that he was of importance. “Man’s attitude to work is not motivated entirely by money or by conditions,” he said. “Russia understands this . and Communism provides an ideology.” Mr Menzies said he considered that the idea of fighting for what was right, not who was right—the attitude that would unite labour and management —should start in the home, where Christian standards should be set and taught. Each individual should consider what he could give, and how he could care for others. Thus a change would be affected, wars would end, and the world would be a place fit for the rising generation to live in. The president of the club (Sir Joseph Ward) presided at the meeting, which marked the fourteenth birthday of the club. Songs were sung by Miss Monica McCaughan, for whom Miss Blanche Atkinson was accompanist. The hostesses were Mrs J. C. Cullman and Mrs C. Shaw. Overseas visitors included Mrs Joan Menzies, Mrs A. L, Sutherland, who, with her husband, Dr. Sutherland, has come from India to, settle in Christchurch, Miss McCourt (Manchester), and Miss Ray Dorien, an English novelist. They and several new members were specially welcomed to the meeting.
