IMPRISONMENT FOR THEFT John Jump (Mr R. W. Edgley), aged 22, a male nurse, pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a Post Office Savings Bank hook and £l5 in money, the property of Trevor Brears. J

Detective-Sergeant c - G - Urquhart said that Brears and the accused worked at Omihi and had shared the same living quarters. Jump had taken the money from a pocket in Brears’s coat during his absence. When Interviewed by the police the accused at first denied all knowledge of the theft but later admitted that he had taken the money, which was found in the lining of his hat. The accused had been convicted of theft at a sitting of the Supreme Court recently. Jump was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard abour. LICENSING BREACHES Leslie Victor Crothers (Mr W. F. Brown) pleaded* guilty when charged with opening the premises of the Racecourse Hotel for the sale of liquor after hours. He was fined £l2.

For supplying liquor after hours, Douglast Albert Stowell was fined £3. The following were each fined 20s for being found on the licensed- premises of the Racecourse Hotel after hours:— Charles Wasley, Clifford Whiteing, Frederick Charles Boniface, Gerald Dudley Dawe, Donald Denoven, Jack Donaldson, James Viator Kennedy, Adrian Bevan Larson, John Harold Duncan, Robert Drink water. Hector Ray Gourlay, Norman Frank Hillier, James Randolph Hindle, Charles William Arthur Hutcheson, George Edward Lee, Peter Andrew Luke, Raymond Luke, Raymond Lloyd Mclntyre, Kenneth McKay, Leonard James Parsons McLaughlan, George Moore, Frederick George Peach, Harold John Quill, Vale Sinclair Smith, and Leo Webster Turvey.

For being found without lawful excuse on the premises of the Black Horse Hotel after hours Gordon Kelly, James Laurenson, Norman Milliken, Ronald McKay, Derek Arthur McNeish, and Terrance Walklin were each fined 20s.

CHARGE OF FORGERY Richard* Croke, aged 59, a labourer, pleaded not guilty to a charge of forging a New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative Association of Canterbury interest warrant in favour of James Casey on February 23 by writing the words “James Casey" upon it, with the Intention that it should be acted upon as genuine. Croke was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. CIVIL CASES (Before Mr R. M. Grant, S.M.) ORDER REFUSED

The Magistrate refused to make an order when R. L. T. Sandford, a gas company employee (Mr W. F. Brown), proceeded against H. Hanson, a labourer (Mr L. H. Armstrong, of the Department of Labour), for possession of a dwellinghouse at 50 Stewart street. The plaintiff claimed possession on the ground of greater hardihip.

JUDGMENT FOR DEFENDANT Judgment was given for the defendant in a claim for £lO 7s 6d by R. R. C. Tunnicliffe (Mr V. G. Spiller) against Timothy Shaughnessy, a labourer (Mr D. W. Russell). The plaintiff claimed that the defendant had been negligent in driving his motor-cycle so that it collided with the rear of the plaintiff's car. damaging the car to the extent of the amount claimed. Costs were allowed to the de- : endant. (Before Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M.) ORDER FOR POSSESSION Emilie Stables, wife of James Alexander Stables (Mr W. R. Lascelles), obtained an order for possession of a dwellinghouse at 50 Rhodes street, against Elfreda Booth, a widow (Mr E. M. Hay), on the ground that the premises were reasonably required by the plaintiff for her own use. The order was made subject to the plaintiff allowing the defendant a weekly tenancy of the upper portion of the defendant's flat, together with the defendant’s kitchen, and stairway access to the downstairs portion of the premises, at £2 a week. William Reynolds, a shop assistant (Mr B. J. Drake), was given possession of rooms, part of the plaintiff’s premises at 9 Essex street, which the plaintiff claimed were occupied by the defendants. Terence Burke, a labourer, and June Burke, his wife, without right, title, or licence. CLAIMS ADJOURNED After hearing evidence, the Magistrate adjourned sine die a claim by Violet Wakefield, a married woman, and Catherine Julia Wakefield, a spinster (Mr D. H. Godfrey), against Daniel Gorrie, a labourer (Mr E. M. Hay), for possession of shop premises and a section of land at 62 Jerrold street. A claim by Francis Hastings Grace, a storeman (Mr E. M. Hay), against J. D. Arthur, a clerk (Mr E. S. Bowie), for possession of a garage at 1 Bristol street, and £2 5s rent of the garage at 2s 6d a week was heard and adjourned to May M. JUDGMENT SUMMONS On a judgment summons, George Ives was ordered to pay the trustees of the Thistle Association Football Club £2l 4s forthwith, in default 22 days’ imprisonment.
