AIR TRANSPORT TO AUSTRALIA
CHARTER FLIGHTS ADVOCATED
SUGGESTED TRAVEL FROM HAREWOOD
The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce considers that sufficient people in Christchurch are awaiting transport to Australia to warrant running charter flights between the Harewood airport and Australia. It has sent a telegram to the Minister in charge of Civil Aviation (Mr T. L. Macdonald) urging that he should arrange such flights.
As the result of reports that many passengers for Australia were awaiting transport in Christchurch, the chamber investigated the position yesterday morning. The president (Professor A. H. locker) said last evening that the chamber had been informed that the number who would welcome direct air travel was sufficient to justify charter flights to and from Harewood.
The telegram sent to the Minister read: “It is estimated that 100 South Islanders require immediate travel by air to Australia. The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce urges you to negotiate charter flights from Harewood to Australia by T.E.A.L., by Australian National Airways, or by some other operator. “The present South Island need is acute. We urge the utmost use of Christchurch airport facilities in this emergency."
