GENERAL MacARTHUR DISMISSED
All Commands Transferred Immediately (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. JO pjn.) WASHINGTON, April 11. Mr Truman announced at a press conference this morning that he had relieved General MacArthur of all his Far Eastern commands. . The President added that he had done so because of General MacArthur’s inability to give his whole-hearted support to the policies of the United States Government. Mr Truman immediately designated Lieutenant-General Matthew Ridgway to be General MacArthur’s successor as Supreme Commander of the Allied . Uommander-in-Chief of the United Nations Command, Commander-In-Chief m the Far East, and Commanding General of the United States Army. y 1 the Far East. The President said that Lieutenant-General James van Fleet had been appointed to succeed General Ridgway as commander of the Bth Army m Korea. The announcement was made at 0600 G.M.T. to-day. The time was fixed to coincide as nearly as possible with the delivery to General MacArthur in lokyo of the order relieving him of his commands, “effective at once.”
