ISRAEL AND SYRIA
CAUTION URGED IN BORDER DISPUTE
(Ret. 8 p.m.) LONDON, April 9. A British Foreign Office spokesman saifi to-day that Britain had cautioned both Israel and Syria to use restraint in their border dispute He said that this advice had been passed on through diplomatic representatives at Tel AViv and Damascus. In Washington to-day, the State Department announced that the United States had protested vigorously to Israel against the bombing of Syrian territory by the Israeli Air Force. Syria had been informed that the United States took a serious view of the border incidents between the two countries. The announcement stated that the United States had expressed iU regret over the recent shooting Of seven Israeli policemen in the southern pert of the demilitarised tone between the two countries.
The Israeli Ambassador, however, was informed that the United State* Government View was that the incident in no Way justified the subsequent retaliatory bombing by the Israeli Air Force Of Syrian territory.
