CONSCRIPTION FOR HOME DEFENCE
Australian Labour Approves
(Rec. 8 p.m.) CANBERRA, March 4. The Federal conference of the Australian Labour Party yesterday decided by 19 votes to 17 to approve compulsory military training for home defence, “subject to proper regard for the national economy.” The Federal executive was empowered to call a special conference, if circumstances warranted a review of its defence policy. The “Sunday Herald” says: “The decision means that the conference has thrown overboard the party’s traditional opposition to all forms of conscription in peace time.” The Government’s National Service Bill, which has already passed the House of Representatives, should now be passed by the Labour-dominated Senate without opposition. The Labour conference officially explained that it still opposed conscription for service overseas.
