AMURI SHOW

EXCELLENT SHEEP AND HORSES

ENTRIES EASILY A RECORD

A fine day. record entries, and the springlike appearance of the ground and the surrounding country combined to make the Amur! Agricultural and Pastoral Association's show at Rotherham on Saturday probably the most successful event in , the history of the. association. The Amur! Association is one of a number of country associations which in recent years, with the fullest support from the people of its district, has been able to raise the status of its annual show from a mediocre affair to one of the best of the Canterbury country fixtures. The light horse display was outstanding, and many of the competitors had good records at major shows. The sheep in certain breeds were very good indeed. The display of 'flowers and vegetables, for some time a feature of the Amuri show, was this year of exceptionally high standard, and in both size and quality would be difficult to betttr anywhere. At present the Amuri looks more like dairying country than one of the principal producers of flne-Woolled sheep. The plain looks deceptively fertile, and the surrounding hills, usually in their autumn brown at this time of the year, are showing green. The association’s ground, on which considerable labour and money have been spent recently, was looking a picture. The going was a trife soft tobe perfect for the ring events, but everything went off smoothly there. The excellent organisation of the show might well be an Object lesson. Practically all the events were got off up to time, and a well-organised loud-speaker system kept the big crowd of visitors fully in touch with what was going on all the time. The light horses were a splendid section. All the saddle classes were well filled, and a feature of the day was the number of entries in the pony sections, and the high standard of the work of the younger riders. The sheep classes were much bigger than they have been at any previous show, and the displays of Southdowns, Corriedales, and Merinos were outstandingly good. There were, of course, in eaeh section, a number of sheep which were sent in more out of loyalty to the association than in the hope of taking tickets, but the tops in the three principal breeds were exceptionally good. The champion Corriedale ram, for instance, was L. J. Iverach’s Royal champion, and there were many other individual sheep ,of about the same class in that and other breeds. Farming in the Amur! ranges over all types from high country runholding to small cropping and fattening undertakings, and Saturday’s show reflected great credit on all of them.
