FLYING CONTROL IMPRESSIVE

ALL-THE WAY WIN AT MOTUKARARA

SPRINT HONOURS TO JOHNNY PEEP

Flying Control led practically throughout to win the Peninaula Handicap at the Banks Peninaula Racing Club’s summer meeting at Motukarara on Saturday. It was the Beau Vite gelding’s first success since he won the same race last year, but his fourth in the Midsummer Handicap at Riccarton on February 3 and his brilliant gallop at Riccarton early last week drew attention to his prospects. Ridden by the west Coast apprentice, A Cowan, Flying Control had a big lead in the middle stages of the race, but he appeared to have reached the end of his run early in the run home. Just when it was expected that he would surrender his lead he came away again under a hard ride and beat the fast-finishing Valley Gold by a length. Johnny Peep completed the day’s totalisator double by winning the Kinloch Handicap narrowly from Spectral, which made a bold effort at his first appearance in open company. Johnny Peep was in front all the way. The doubles combination, Flying Control and Johnny Peep returned £2B 18s for £l.

Flying Control carried 776 10s tickets of which 203 were redeemed on the Johnny Peep-Magical bracket. The favourites did not have much success, and three winners paid double figures. The only successful win-and-place favourite was Big Chance, which won the second division of the Bradley Stakes. The meeting was held in fine weather before a fair attendance. The track was soft after heavy rain last Thursday but it had made a surprisingly good recovery. The totalisator turnover was £41,037, including £3305 on the double, as against £48,350 last year. Peninsula Handicap Flying Control was soon In front in the Peninsula Handicap, and he was followed past the stands by Royal Tan, Travesty. Responsive and Profane (in line), Valley Gold, Golden Amber, and Finance. At the mile Flying Control had a lead of six lengths from Royal Tan, which was racing on the inside of Responsive and just ahead of Profane. Valley Gold was at the head of the others, but five lenfths back. Flying Control led past the five furlongs by five lengths from Royal Tan, with half a length to Responsive and Profane, and two lengths to Valley Gold. At that stage Finance was last, two lengths behind Travesty. Royal Tan and company reduced Flying Control's lead to three lengths at the three furlongs, where Valley Gold was fast improving hla position, and Travesty was Royal Tan challenged on the inside early in the run home, but he could make tittle impression on Flying Control, which ran on gamely under a hard drive to beat the fast-finishing Valley Gold by a length. Responsive was a neck away third and half a length in front of Royal Tan. Travesty made up ground in the run home to be on terma with Profane in fifth place. The others, Golden Amber and Finance, were well back. Kinloch Handicap »«! «»• w «y to win the Kinloch Handicap by a head from Spectral, which finished strongly from the middle of the field. Disturbance and Chord were slow away, and Johnny Peep was in front in a few strides. After a furlong Johnny Peep was followed by Entrancing, Faultrosa, Resolute. Spectral, Magical, Detention, Peridot and Trident, Disturbance being at the tail of the field.

Magical moved forward to trail his bracketed mate Johnny Peep at the three furlongs, Faultrosa, entrancing, Resolute, Detention, and Spectral being most prominent of the others. Magigal was beaten soon after straightening up, Entrancing faded inside the furlong. and Spectral was Johnny Peep’s only challenger over the finafstages. »i’W Sgame l length away fourth, and she was followed hMM by Peridot.
