CEMENT WORKERS’ STRIKE
NEGOTIATIONS FAIL AGAIN (Now Zealand Prese Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 21. Nine thousand tons of cement has so far been lost at the Portland cement works, Whangarei, because of the strike by the employees of the works. A fur' er 8000 tons of badly-needed cement has not been distributed. The works have been closed for three weeks. A conference between the Portland Cement Workers’ Union and the company was held under the chairmanship of the Conciliation Commissioner (Mr C. L. Hunter) on Tuesday. The employers offered to increase all rates of pay by 2d an hour, together with certain increases in special payments. The increases were to be retrospective to January 22 and subject to the 15 per cent, general increase.
The union is asking for an increase of 6d an hour, and conditions “similar to the Golden Bay cement workers’ award.” Reporting this, the secretary of the union (Mr J. O’Connor) said that the negotitions broke down when the offer was rejected by a “larger than average” meeting of the union.
