HORTICULTURAL EXHIBITION

Brilliant Display At Barracks

BIG CROWDS ON FIRST DAY The Canterbury centennial horticultural exhibition, which opened in the King Edwdrd Barracks, Christchurch, yesterday, must be rated one of the greatest attractions in Canterbury’s centennial celebrations. Many persons who saw the profession on Tuesday may think that nothing could equal that floral display for beauty and artistry, or perhaps that the stark appearance of the barracks could not lend itself to an outstanding horticultural show. But of all the many thousands that passed through the barracks gates yesterday few could describe adequately the magnificence of the exhibition which has been staged. Blooms from a wide area are gathered in the competitive sections for gladioli, dahlias, and decorations. People not interested in the competitive side of the exhibition will find much to interest them in the displays. Easily one of the most attractive is that sponsored by the Canterbury Horticultural Society, which illustrates 100 years of floral art in three period sets.

The first set, on Victorian lines, features a fireplace flanked by a whatnot, inlaid lacquered furniture, and an ormolu gold lamp. The second, an Edwardian room, has appropriate furniture, and is decorated with tiger lilies, asparagus fern, and roses. Tne third set, a modern room, is probably the most colourful of the three. Primroses, dahlias, gladioli, Chinese clematis, and sunflowers are used to good effect. Dozens of varieties of cacti exhibited by the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Cactus and Succulent Society attracted much attention yesterday. All the Slants, ranging from small fur-covered alls to tall, prickly spines, were grown in New Zealand from seedlings ana cuttings imported from America and Europe.

Impressive Exhibits The vegetable exhibit by Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, includes seven varieties of potatoes and four varieties of onions. Kohl rabi and egg plant are two of the unusual vegetables on the stand. Giant apples and peaches as well as many other types of fruit and vegetables made a colourful display from Nelson. Complete with a border of tobacco leaves and. hop vines, the display is,very attractive. . Ijt . ■ ; ’< 1.4 » Typifying the beauty of the province, the West Coast display, with ferns, native bush, rocks, moss, ahd a waterfall, is a memorable one.

Good entries were received for all the competitive sections. The sections comprise the national show of the New Zealand Gladiolus Society, the South Island show of the Dahlia Society of New Zealand, and the combined gladiolus and dahlia show of the Canterbury Horticultural Society. The gladiolis are of a very high standard for blooms exhibited so late in the season. All of the flowers are superbly grown and well staged. The dahlias are in surprisingly good condition, considering the unfavourable weather this season. The exhibition will be open to-day and to-morrow. Awards are:— N.Z.
