M. OTWAY BEATS N.S.W. JUNIOR CHAMPION

(Rec. 12.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 12. The New Zealand tennis team made a good showing on the first day of their match against New South Wales at Killara to-day. New South Wales won four rubbers, eight sets, 86 games, and New Zealand, two rubbers, six sets, 74 games. M. Otway, who is 19, beat the Australian junior champion, K. Rosewall, 8-6, 6-3. Rosewall recently won the singles championship at the Manly seaside tournament. Otway’s service troubled Rosewall and was the deciding factor in his win. Otway used every opportunity to move into the net and in this way forced the steady Rcsewall into errors.

J. A- Barry put up a great fight against L. Hoad. Barry won the first set, but from then on Hoad's service improved and it played an important part in his ultimate win. J. E. Robson fully extended A. Quist and was unlucky in not taking the first set.

Bromwich replaced Sidwell, who withdrew from the New South Wales team with an injured foot. In his match against the New Zealand captain, R. S. McKenzie, Bromwich was too accurate and versatile and won with the loss of only two games. Otway and Barry did remarkably well to take the first set from the Wimbledon doubles champions, Bromwich and Quist; but the latter showed too much court craft for the New Zealanders. Robson and McKenzie, after a battle lasting an hour and a half beat the New South Wales junior champions, Rosewall and Hoad.
