“ROTARY QUITE OPEN”
MELBOURNE COMMENT ON DECREE
(Rec. 12.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, Jan. 12. The decree forbidding priests from joining Rotary clubs and advising Roman Catholic laymen to abstain from membership was “quite incomprehensible,” said the District Governor (Mr Ernest Bate) to-night. “Rotary has no secret formulas and is quite open, with its essentia] creed of goodwill and service,-and through it the promotion of international understanding,” he said. In Brisbane a Past District Governor (Mr Percy Allen) said the edict would mean many resignations. Rotary's job—the creation of peace and goodwill—would be seriously impaired y the loss of senior members. The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Brisbane (Dr. Duhig) saidi “I do not know whether the Rotary club may be considered .anything different on the Continent from what it is here. The Vatican is very wary of any societies being used for anti-religious purposes. We regard the Continental societies as suspect, because they may be used by designing people.”
