BRITONS IN HONG KONG
Government Orders Registration
(Rec. 10 p.m.) HONG KONG, Jan. 12. The Hong Kong Government today enacted regulations requiring all British subjects in the colony aged 17 and over to register before February 1. An official spokesman said: “We are registering British subjects with a view to having a complete list of them so that, if necessary, we can introduce national service.’ 7 The step was not inspired by anv immediate deterioration in the situation or because “we think we are going to be invaded, or going to have an emergency.” The spokesman added: “We would be foolish if we in Hong Kong did not take cognisance of the world situation at the present time. Should Hong Kong be faced with an emergency. there are all kinds of jobs that must be performed, and we want a complete list of all the available manpower and womanpower that we can call upon in such an event.” Australia's Oldest Minister.—Australia’s oldest minister, the Rev. George Reeve, of Epping, Sydney, will be 100 years old to-morrow. Still actively engaged in church affairs, he has been a Methodist minister for 76 years and has been in charge of 16 churches.— Sydney. January 12.
