SALE OF AUSTRALIAN CORVETTES
EXPORT PROHIBITED CANBERRA, Janugrv 12. A regulation under the Customs Ac|, gazetted last night, prohibits the export from Australia of the two former British Navy corvettes, Goulburn and Ballarat, It was. announced last week that the corvettes had been sold to a Chinese buyer and that an ocean-going tug had arrived at Sydney to tow them to Hong K Minister of the Navy (Mr J. Francis) saiu on January 5 that the corvettes were lent by the Admiralty to Australia during the war and that they were sold in 1947 on behalf of the Admiralty, the purchaser being a “man in Sydney.’’ He added that information had been received recently that the vessels had been resold outside Australia. It is understood that fears are entertained that if allowed to go to the East, the vessels will fall into Communist hands.
