CRICKET CANTERBURY OUT FOR 169

SHIELD GAME AGAINST CENTRAL DISTRICTS

BURTT AGAIN BOWLS WELL (New Zealand Press Association)

PALMERSTON NORTH, January 12. A dogged partnership between F. Dawson and T. B. Burtt, which yielded 89 runs, saved Canterbury from a complete rout when the Plunket Shield cricket match against Central Districts was resumed at the Palmerston North Sports Ground this morning, In ideal - .weather, before a moderate crowd. ’ • Canterbury’s overnight position of five wickets down for 52 became worse 13 minutes after play began, when M. B. Poore was dismissed without adding do Ms score of 14, but Dawson and Burtt enabled Canterbury to finish its innings only 19 runs behind Central Districts. At stumps, Central Districts, in its second innings, had lost four wickets for 109. The experiment of playing Plunket Shield matches outside of the four main centres is likely to prove a financial success. The gross gate receipts for the first two days of the match exceed £175, and with a continuation of fine weather tomorrow might well reach £3OO. G. F. Cresswell and H. B. Cave were the best bowlers when Canterbury’s innings was resumed. Neither Dawson nor Burtt took liberties, but they scored whenever the opportunity presented, and they ran well. Dawson on-drove G. F. Cresswell for four, cover drove A. Cresswell for four, and then hit G. F. Cresswell for a glorious six. The partnership was unbroken at lunch, with the score at 152.

A quick change came over the game after the adjournment. In his second over, F. Cresswell caught Dawson off his own bowling, and in his next he had G. F. Anderson caught in slips by McVicar, who had then taken three valuable catches.

H. B. Cave, who replaced A. Cresswell, bowling down wind, trapped Burtt, lbw, and nine were down for 155. J. A. Hayes joined J. D. Alderson, and 14 were added before Hayes was dismissed by D. D. Beard with a catch in slips off Cave. When the roller was applied to the pitch, clouds of dust rose from the surface and it was soon apparent that Burtt would revel in the conditions. McVicar and Meuli opened confidently against Hayes and Alderson, and it was not until the latter was relieved by Burtt that the batsmen appeared to be in any real difficulties. At tea Central Districts had scored 24 without loss.

Burtt resumed bowling after tea, and with his fourth ball had McVicar caught by R. T. Dowker in the slips. Cave joined Meuli. At 20, A. R. Mac Gibbon missed a catch from Meuli off Burtt, but the bowler had his revenge next ball, when Meuli, who had gone down the pitch, failed to get his bat to the ball, and was well stumped by Anderson. Two wickets were down for 37.

A very subdued J. A. Ongley joined Cave. In 30 minutes Ongley scored from only one stroke. At 11 he went for a big hit, and edged the ball to Dowker in the slips. The Taranaki left-hander. L. S. M. Miller. joined Cave, and the two set about attempting to retrieve a threatening collapse. They stayed together for 43 minutes. during which time only 29 runs were added. Cave was clean bowled by a beßUtiful ball from Burtt, after making 24. M. E. Chapple joined Miller, who began to force the score along. He brought 100 up after 152 minutes with a lovely off drive to the boundary, off Alderson. Scores:—

Fall of wickets: one for 7; two for 10; three for 26; four for 38; five for 52; six for 58: seven for 147; eight for 149; *ine for 153; 10 for 169. Bowling.—A. Cresswell, four wickets for 42 runs; F. SHIELD BOWLING RECORD BURTT BEATS MERRITT’S AGGREGATE T. B. Burtt. Canterbury's slow lefthand, bowter, established a new Plunket Shield record in the match against Central Districts. In the first innings of the match he took five wickets, bringing his aggregate for the season to 31, equal to the record established by W. E. Merritt another Canterbury and New Zealand slow spin bowler of the late 1920's and early 1930 s. In Central Districts' second innings Burtt has taken all four of the wickets which have fallen so far, and his total of 35 may be further increased to-day Merritt took his 31 wickets in only three matches, but Buitt's performances have been quite extraordinary. His figures so far are:—v. Otago, two for 24 and five for 40; v. Wellington, five for 55 and four for 69; v. Auckland, five for 75 and five for 99; v. Central Districts, five tor 56 and four for 43 (innings incomWOMEN’S MATCHES WELLINGTON RETAINS SHIELD Wellington, the present holder, retained the Hallyburton-Johnstone Shield when the final round of the women’s cricket matches was played at Hagley Oval yesterday.
