TIMARU SUMMER MEETING

FANCIFUL AND STAR ROSA MAY WIN

IMPERIAL GLOBE FAVOURED

The prospects are for fine weather and a large attendance at the Timaru Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Washdyke to-day. The fields have- all filled well and the racing should be lull of interest. A number of horses in each field have good recent form to their credit and this is expected to provide a reliable guide. The track should be in first-class order after recent rain.

The Addington trainer, S. A. Edwards, is expected to provide the favourite for the John Hole Memorial Handicap in Star Rosa, a grand type of race mare, which has shown her best form on grass tracks. She scored an effortless win in the Rangiora Centennial Cup last month, giving starts of up to 48yds to a large field. She is on the front mark to-day, and she should set the remainder of the field a merry chase. Star Rosa should have a good record this autumn. Merrymaker, Royal Robin, Scottish Nurse, and Scott Wrack are likely to -pffer most Opposition to Star Rosa, but if Edwards’s candidate races up to her recent form it is difficult to pick anything to beat her.

Fanciful, which last season proved herself a good mare over all distances and in any conditions, is likely to win the Taiko Handicap, in wniva Kileea Ui'lian and Josedale Audubon may show up. Others with bright prospects Hiciuae Fillmore, Uranium, and Scott Wrack.*

Fanciful will be driven by her trainer, N. L. Berkett, who at the Greymouth Trotting Club’s meeting last week had eight drives for six wins and one third. Berkett drove Fairy Wand Clean Sweep, and Perfect Trail to victory on the first day of the meeting, and was placed third with Essendon. On the final day of the meeting, he was unplaced with Fairy Wand, and then he won at his next three appearances with Essendon, Fairy Wand, and Clean Sweep. Berkett has had a good measure of success this season, and he should add to his record to-day with Essendon, Royal Victory, and Fanciful. Lahore May Win Lahore, which has had two wins and four placings in his 10 starts this season, should be one of the hardest to beat in the Waimate Handicap. Like many of the progeny of the triple New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, Indianapolis, the half-brother to the speedy Parawa Derby has become more solid with age, and it will not be surprising if he goes on to the best company. Essendon, a good performer at Greymouth, Squire Dillon, and Affectation may be his strongest opponents. Useful improvers will meet in the Levels Handicap. The promising Prince Regent is selected to be the hardest to beat, but li- will have to be at his best to hold off Stronghold, a runaway winner at Geraldine in November, Supreme Globe, wiich has shown a great turn of speed <n hit races. Bronzette, Goldbox, and Helen Grattan. Ingenuity, Global Voyage, and Jenny Dillon are a likely trio in the Waimate Handicap, which is one of the most open races on the card. Ingenuity has been racing most consistently, and Global Voyage has shown more than average ability in his races this season. If Thelma Globe leaves the mark correctly in the Fairlie Handicap, she should not be troubled to win. She has shown plenty of speed in her races, but she has marred her recent efforts at the barrier. Authie has shown his abilitv to run out two miles, and he should make a bold showing. Anitra, a winner on the West Coast circuit, has the ability to race well here. ' Most of the runners in the Kingsdown Handicap will have to be taken on trust, but Gliding Wrack, Jenene, and Dainty Joe should race well. Imperial Globe should gain a welldeserved win in the Pareora Handicap, which has drawn a field of nine. Perfect Trail, Diamed, and Popotai are expected to offer most opposition. The doubles totalisator will operate on the John Hole Memorial Handicap arid the Kerrytown Handicap. Selections are:— • 11 a.m.—Kingsdown Handicap: Gliding Wrack, Jenene.
