CARNATION SHOW

A very high standard was maintained at the second annual show of the Lyttelton Horticultural Society which wai held this week. There were 216 entrlti on display and they made a very colourful showing. The premier bloom in the open section was Spangle, exhibited by Mrs M. Radovonich, Mrs A. Rhind being awarded the premier bloom in the novice section In the decorative section Mrs K. Beaumont's exhibit was, in the judge's opinion, most outstanding. SEA CADET CORPS’ CAMP AT QUAIL ISLAND Cadets of the Navy League Sea Cadet Corps are at present undergoing a training course at Quail Island which, for the present has been commissioned as a ship of the Roval Navy. There are 65 cadets in camo, being 15 each from Auckland, Wellington, and Otago, and 20 from Canterbury. The course is being conducted by officers of the Canterbury Division a* follows:—Lieutenant F. J. Glanville, commanding officer; Lieutenant L. A. Carr, executive officer: Sub-Lieutenant L. Luxton. signals officer; Sub-Lieutenant E. Coburn, boat officer; Mr F. Scott, ambulance officer; C.P.O. R. Garner, gunnery Instructor; C.P.O. N. Bates, master-at-arms. Tlie ship was commissioned on Monday in the presence of Lieutenant-Commander T. Markwiek, senior officer of the Sea Cadet Corps in New Zealand, and Lieu-tcnant-Colonel J. Breth»rton. president of the -Canterbury Navy League, who welcomed the cadets on behalf of the League. Instruction consists mainly of signals, boatwork, souad drill, rifle shooting, and organised gam»s. Cadets are called at 6.30 a.m. and fall in for physical training or a bathe. Breakfast is at'7.ls, and at 8 a.m. they fall in to clean ship. Divisions are at 9 a.m.. and after colour! and pravers cadets go to instruction. Three classes are under instruction while the fourth class acts as "ship’s company" and does the routine work and maintenance of the camp. A day's leave was granted on Wednesday to enab'e cadets to visit Christchurch, and a halt-dav's lea'-e will be granted today The camp will be open to visitors and friends of the cadets to-morrow. The camp will conclude on Tuesday. Two medals—one for marksmanship and the other for the most outstanding cadet at the camp—have been presented by Commander C. H. Palmer.
