CRICKET OTAGO WINS BY 251 RUNS

WELLINGTON BATSMEN COLLAPSE

BRILLIANT BOWLING BY F. W. STANLEY (New Zealand Press Association) _ ... DUNEDIN, January 10. Wellington collapsed in the second innings of the Plunket Shield match against Otago and was beaten outright by 251 runs. After Otago had declared its second innings closed at 268 for nine wickets Wellington was left 334 runs to get in three and a half hours. Brilliant bowling by F. W. Stanley, who was making his first appearance in shield cricket, soon put Otago in a strong position for an outright win and Wellington was dismissed for 82 with an hour and a half to spare. Stanley took five wickets for 39 runs off 14 overs. The other Otago pace bowler, G. W. Overton, took three wickets for 29 runs.

Otago carried its overnight total of 173 for four wickets to 268 for nine wickets when play was resumed to-day in warm but overcast weather. The Carisbrook wicket was still playing easily, but the score was not pushed along. Chief interest centred in L. A. Watt’s prospects of reaching his century but at 94 he was out lbw to S. R. O’Neill. This was 'half an hour after the luncheon adjournment and Otago's innings was closed with one wicket still to fall. Watt had been at the crease the whole time—--389 minutes—and his total included only seven fours.

R. McK. Murray with three for 32 and S. R. O’Neill with three for 60 were the most successful bowlers.

Any plans Wellington may have had to try and force a win soon had to be directed towards playihg out time, for both the openers, R. A. Vance and A. F. Nightingale, were back in the pavilion with only 5 runs scored. The procession continued until J. W. Kelly and O’Neill made a stand, although J. R. Reid had earlier given indications of staying. His injured foot was obviously causing him trouble, however, and he had to have a runrier. Overton took his wicket with a beautiful length ball. Kelly-went after a game stand and he was quick! y .followed by J. F. Jones, nine wickets then being down for 41 runs. C. L. Randall stayed with O’Neill until the Mea adjournment and the pair resumed their task with the slight hope of rain, which was threatening, saving the outright defeat. They added 41 to the total when O'Neill was stumped. His 37 was the highest score of the innings. There was again a large crowd at the match and the gate takings for the four days were £lO2O. With a match against Central Districts still to play Otago is now four points ahead in the shield competition, and is in almost an unassailable position. The only teem with’ even a remote possibility of success is Central Districts which' has three matches to play each of which it would need to win outright in the three days allotted for its games.
