INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
Dedication Of Harewood
AIRCRAFT ARRIVE FROM OVERSEAS
The Christchurch international airport at Harewood was dedicated by the * Prime Minister (Mr Holland) yesterday afternoon. Two great airliners from overseas, which had flown the Tasman Sea from Sydney during the day, arrived early in the afternoon. Their passengers included official representatives of the Australian Government and Centennial Games competitors from Britain, the Continent, and Australia.
A hint that the air link between Melbourne and Christchurch may open as soon as regular services begin was given by the Australian Minister for Air (Mr T. W. White). He thought Essendon would be ready before Harewood. There was an enormous crowd at Harewood. Immediately after the morning’s centennial procession cars began to leave the city for the airport. Great parking areas were quickly occupied and there were cars on all the roads nearby.
A fine display of flying was provided between the landings of the big aircraft from overseas, and frequently during the afternoon the regular services of the National Airways Corporation landed and departed at the airport.
